Matilde Ortiz Herrera

Matilde Ortiz Herrera, age 92, of West, passed away Sunday evening, August 30, 2026 at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Hospital in Waco.

A rosary will be recited 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, with visitation from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with Rev. Amado Ramos as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Matilde was born September 13, 1933 in Chalchihuites, Zacatecas, Mexico, the daughter of Nieves Herrera and Refugio Ortiz. She was united in marriage to the late Manuel Avila. Matilde was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. She was a homemaker. Matilde enjoyed sewing, eating her bread, and drinking Coca-Cola. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she always lifted up in prayer.

Matilde is also preceded in death by her parents; children, Jose, Primitivo, Antonio, Alfonso, Angel, Agustin, Juan, and Rosa; and siblings, Paola, Jesusa, Beatriz, Rosario, and Polito.

Survivors include her children, Antonia, Lucina, Everardo, Jaime, Elena, Maria, and Alberto; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; a sister, Maria Luica; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
