James Roy "Jimmy" Doherty, Jr., age 77, of West, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2026 at Ascension Providence Hospital in Waco.

A rosary will be recited 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 5:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2026 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant, assisted by Deacons Ronnie Sykora and Robin Waters. Urn burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Jimmy was born February 9, 1949, in Hillsboro, the son of James and Bobbie (Hornsby) Doherty. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1967 and continued his education at Hill Junior College, where he played baseball, and Sam Houston State University. On July 21, 1973, he married Kathryn "Kathy" Devers in West. Jimmy was a kindhearted man who never met a stranger and had a genuine love for his family, friends, and community. He believed in giving back, and throughout his life, he devoted countless hours to making West a better place. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. His dedication to the community was evident through his service on the West Community Hospital Board, West Independent School District Board, and West City Council. He was also a longtime Westfest Associate Director, serving as Pivo Chairman, and a member of Knights of Columbus Council #2305. Baseball and softball held a special place in Jimmy's heart. He served as President of the West Baseball/Softball League, coached youth softball, and was a TASO umpire for many years. He also shared his knowledge of the game through pitching lessons to numerous youth athletes. One of his most meaningful contributions was helping bring the community's baseball and softball fields to life as a memorial to his beloved son, Kevin. It was a lasting tribute that has allowed generations of young athletes to enjoy the game he loved.

Jimmy worked as a construction equipment salesman for RDO Equipment in Waco, but his contributions extended far beyond his career. He was always willing to lend a hand, share a story, or find a way to help someone in need. Many will remember seeing him outside gathering pecans beneath his giant pecan trees, a familiar sight that became affectionately known as his "pecan ministry." It was just one more way Jimmy found joy in sharing with others.

Away from his many community commitments, Jimmy enjoyed traveling, visiting wineries, relaxing by the pool, and mixing up a good Bloody Mary. He especially loved watching his grandchildren play sports, proudly cheering them on from the sidelines. Whether he was coaching a team, serving his community, spending time with family, or simply visiting with a friend, Jimmy had a way of making people feel welcome and appreciated. Jimmy leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, service, and love for his family and the community he called home. His presence will be deeply missed, but the many lives he touched and the good he accomplished will continue to be felt throughout West for years to come.

Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents and his 5 year old son, Kevin Doherty in 1983.
