James Thomas, age 72, of Waco, passed away late Saturday afternoon, January 18, 2020 at Providence Hospital in Waco. Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West. James was born February 25, 1947 in Weatherford, the son of Charles and Bernice (Williams) Thomas. He attended schools in Weatherford and Robinson. On January 25, 1985 he was united in marriage to Wanda Haferkamp in Waco. James proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a carpenter for many years. James enjoyed cooking BBQ Brisket in his backyard, playing with his dog "Sassy", and gambling at Diamond Jack's in Bossier City. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was deeply loved and will be truly missed by all who knew him. James is also preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Mike Hutyra, his sons, Guy Smith, Randy Smith, Junior Smith, and Roger Smith; and a brother, Charles Thomas. Survivors include his beloved wife of 35 years, Wanda Thomas of Waco; his children, Wanda Hutyra of West, Dick "Bubba" Smith and wife Threasa of Lacy Lakeview, Troyce Thomas and wife Dawn of Oklahoma, Wilburn Thomas of Lacy Lakeview, Richard Thomas and wife Leslie of Joshua, J. W. Smith and wife Donna of McGregor, and Dickie Smith and wife Kim of Axtell; a sister, Elizabeth Wright; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to charity of choice.
