Georgia Hughes

March 30, 1936 — November 21, 2025

Georgia Ann Hughes, age 89, passed away peacefully, on Friday November 21, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.

The family will receive visitors Monday, December 8, 2025 from 10:30 a.m. until service time at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. A rosary will be recited at 11:00 a.m. Monday, followed by Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:30 a.m., with Rev. Timothy Vaverek as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Georgia was born March 30, 1936, in Hill County, Texas, the eldest child of Johnny F. Sr. and Ann Kolar Muehlstein and was raised in a modest West Texas farming family. She grew up in Stamford, Texas, and graduated from Avoca High School. On June 6, 1954, at the age of 18, Ann married the love of her life, Kern Michael Hughes Sr., a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and a Korean War veteran. Their marriage of 50 years, until Kern's passing in 2004, was marked by deep devotion, shared adventures, and a strong commitment to their growing family. After the birth of their first two children, they moved their family from Texas to San Diego, California. That first move sparked a lifelong passion for travel. Following Kern's discharge from the Marine Corps, they returned to Texas to raise their five children, but the world continued to call. Through Kern's business opportunities, they also lived in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Colorado, and abroad in Seoul, Korea.

Ann's curiosity and adventurous spirit carried her far beyond the places she called home. She fulfilled many of her travel dreams by visiting extended family in the Czech Republic, as well as touring Poland, Russia, China, Austria, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Wales. Wherever she went, she had a special talent for finding the shops. Her family learned to expect that any "quick look" would likely turn into an extra bag (or two), often holding a trinket of jewelry and a carefully chosen matching outfit-or vice versa. Above all else, Ann will be remembered as a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was always caring and giving, and she worried, often to a fault, because she wanted the very best for the people she loved.

Ann is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kern; her parents; her brother, Johnny Muehlstein Jr; and her son-in-law, Richard Dupont.

She is survived by her five children, whom she loved deeply: Kern Hughes Jr. and his wife Jenny, Margaret Dupont, Kevin Hughes and his wife Tobi, Mark Hughes, and Larry Hughes and his wife Karmel. She is also cherished as "Grandma" to twelve grandchildren and as "Great-Grandma" to ten great grandchildren. She is further survived by her siblings, Larry Muehlstein and Mildred Powell.

Ann's legacy lives on in the family she raised, the values she modeled, and the sweet love she gave so freely. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she and Kern are reunited, and that the story they began together continues in the lives of those they leave behind.

Pallbearers are Micheal Hughes, Kevin Hughes, Mark Hughes, Larry Hughes, Eric Dupont, and Jason Dupont.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Cemetery Association.
