Born on August 22, 1935, in Leroy, Texas, Asa was the youngest of four children born to Alice and Asa Gamble, Sr. He grew up in Leroy and graduated from West High School in 1953. In 1954, Asa met the love of his life, Joan Dvoracek, on a blind date. What began that evening became a 69-year love story. Asa and Joan were married on March 9, 1956, and remained devoted to one another throughout their life together.
They began their married life in West, Texas, and later moved to Arlington after the birth of their first child, Annette. There, they welcomed four more children-Charlotte, Richard, Patricia, and David. In 1966, the family made their home in Richland Hills, Texas, where Asa and Joan built a life centered on love, hard work, and family. Their home was always full of activity, laughter, and the steady presence of two people who made their children feel deeply loved and supported.
Asa worked for Bell Helicopter in Arlington for 10 years as a transportation foreman before joining Champion Auto Parts in Fort Worth, where he served as superintendent of trucking and warehousing. After another 10 years, he joined his son Richard's company, Southwest Drapery Installation. Father and son worked side by side for the next 32 years. During that time, Asa became the principal installer for Tri-Tex Enterprises and formed lasting friendships with those he worked alongside. He retired fully in 2018, proud of a lifetime of honest work and the people he met along the way.
Asa had a genuine love for people and for life itself. He never met a stranger, and he had a way of making everyone feel like an old friend. He traveled extensively throughout his life, visiting every state except Maine, and he collected friendships wherever he went. He especially loved time with his family and any opportunity to be outdoors. Hunting, fishing, camping, and simply being together were among his greatest joys.
Retirement brought Asa and Joan back to their Texas roots. In Hubbard, they built a ranch that became the heart of their family's world. It was more than a home, it was a place where everyone was welcome, where stories were shared on porches, meals stretched long into the evening, and grandchildren grew up surrounded by love. Together they raised Longhorn cattle and created a place filled with warmth, laughter, and lasting memories.
In retirement, Asa and Joan also discovered a shared love of cowboy music and poetry. They traveled throughout the Southwest to hear their favorite performers and poets, and along the way formed friendships with many of them, including Red Steagall, Don Edwards, R.W. Hampton, and Michael Martin Murphey, among others. These journeys brought them great joy and became some of their most treasured memories together.
Asa and Joan were members of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, the Texas Longhorn Association, the Ranching Heritage Museum, and the National Cowboy Museum. Asa was also a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
Above all else, Asa was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who took the greatest pride in simply being present in their lives. His steady presence, strength, humor, and kindness shaped generations of his family. He leaves behind a legacy not only of hard work, but of love that was felt deeply by everyone who knew him.
Asa was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan; his son, David; his son-in-law, Russell Wells; his parents, Alice and Asa Gamble, Sr.; and his siblings and their spouses, Louise and Roland Beasley, Jeanette and Bill Jones, and Charles and Geneva Gamble.
He is survived by his children, Annette Wells, Charlotte Mitchell, Richard Gamble and wife Jacqueline, and Patricia Klein and husband Robert; seven grandchildren, Emily Steele and husband Evan, Evan Gamble and wife Jennasen, Angelique (Lawless and husband Jeffrey, David Mitchell and wife Jennifer, Lauren Acome and husband Aaron, Travis Klein and wife Sarah, and Andrea Klein and significant other Alejandro Rocha; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved him dearly.
Asa's life was full, well-lived, and deeply rooted in love for his family, his friends, and the life he and Joan built together. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
