Maurice Montgomery

FuMaurice Montgomery, age 74, of Aquilla, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 3, 2009 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday at Aderhold Funeral Home in West. Burial will follow at Prairie Grove Cemetery near Aquilla. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Montgomery was born September 27, 1934 in Aquilla, the son of John Douglas and Jimmie (Poteet) Montgomery. He attended the Lebanon school. Maurice worked as a shop foreman for U-Haul in Grand Prairie for over twenty years. He then worked as a farmer for Gerik Family Farms in Aquilla for over 15 years, before retiring in 1996. Maurice was a very devoted father and loved spending time with his family. He was a very accomplished Mandolin player and enjoyed Coon hunting and raising award winning coon dogs. Survivors include two sons, Richard Montgomery of Alexandria, VA, and Andrew A. Montgomery of Aquilla; two step-daughters, Joy Vowell and husband James of Whitney and Marlina Compton and husband Jason of Crawford; three sisters, Daisy Shay of Oklahoma City, OK, Betty Kirkpatrick of Peoria and Anna Bell of Whitney; former daughter-in-law, Cheryl Montgomery; seven grandsons, Andrew Montgomery Jr., Brandon Montgomery, Tyler Montgomery, Dakota and Daniel Vowell, and Dalton and Dylan Compton; one great-granddaughter, Aurora; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Paul Perry, Travis Perry, Curtis Poteet, Sid Underwood, Roy Shay and Nolan Saulters. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Gerik Jr., Tommy Montgomery, Steve Montgomery and David Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Aquilla Volunteer Fire Department.
