Eugene C. Horak, age 94, of West, passed away late Friday morning, February 23, 2018 at West Rest Haven in West. A rosary will be recited and Mass of Christian Burial celebrated 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Darrell Kostiha as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, conducted by the West Veterans Honor Guard. Eugene was born January 3, 1924 in Penelope, the son of Charles and Anna (Drozd) Horak. He attended schools in Penelope and was a 1942 graduate of Penelope High School. Eugene served his country with the United States Navy during World War II. On August 4, 1947 he was united in marriage to Marie Mikulik in West. Eugene was a terminal manager for the Southern Pacific Railroad for over 40 years before retiring in 1985. Since then he and Marie have lived in Ennis, Dennison, Groesbeck, La Marque and Bremond. Eugene was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. He was also a member of the VFW Post #4819, American Legion Post #478, KJT Society #31, SPJST Lodge #54, the 50/50 Club and the Czech Heritage Society. He was a very active member of the Knight of Columbus Council #2305 and a 4th Degree Knight. Eugene is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Evelyn Pribyla, Edith Jones and Evangela Horak. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Marie Horak; his sister, Ann Schneider and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in West. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to St. Mary's School Endowment Fund.
